The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Morocco 2030 Foundation signed a partnership agreement on Tuesday in Rabat establishing a framework for cooperation (2025-2030) aimed at turning sports into a lever for education, inclusion and social cohesion.
This agreement is part of the national momentum initiated ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (2025–2029), and the 2030 World Cup, which the Kingdom of Morocco will host, UNESCO said in a press release.
This is the first agreement by the Morocco 2030 Foundation dedicated to the social and educational aspects of sport, marking a key milestone in its commitment to sustainable regional development.
“With the Morocco 2030 Foundation, we are making sport a driver of education and inclusion,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, quoted in the press release, adding that “through such initiatives, we will transform the momentum of major events organized in the Kingdom into sustainable actions for the youth and local communities.”
For his part, the President of the Morocco 2030 Foundation, Fouzi Lekjaa, said that “in line with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, this partnership agreement between the Morocco 2030 Foundation and UNESCO will consolidate the role of sports — particularly football — as an instrument of sustainable development and a vehicle for social inclusion.”
The specific project “From stadiums to territories: sport as a driver of change,” funded by UNESCO and implemented with the Morocco 2030 Foundation, is the first initiative to emerge from this agreement.
It aims to embed the social legacy of AFCON 2025 through three components, namely community tournaments called “CAN de la citoyenneté” (AFCON for citizenship), a national campaign called “Valeurs du sport” (Values of sport), and a festival called “Égalité et développement par le sport” (Equality and development through sport), including a module dedicated to girls and women.
