Swiss MP Laurent Wehrli, chairperson of the Switzerland-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group, praised the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara, calling it “a new success for Royal diplomacy” and “a clear confirmation of the Moroccan character of the Sahara.”

Speaking to MAP, the member of the National Council (Lower House of the Swiss Parliament) noted that the UN resolution represents a historic milestone and a recognition of Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, “the result of consistent, calm, and forward-looking Royal diplomacy.”

Wehrli also commended the Kingdom’s “steadfast and measured” diplomatic efforts, as well as the concrete economic and social development initiatives implemented in the Southern Provinces.

“This vote confirms Morocco’s credibility on the international stage and its commitment to stability, dialogue, and lasting peace,” he stressed.

“It also sends a strong signal to all of Morocco’s partners, including Switzerland, who recognize its key role in the stability of the African continent and the Mediterranean region,” the MP added.

The chairperson of the Switzerland-Morocco Parliamentary Group called on regional actors, particularly Algeria, to seize this opportunity to open a new chapter in Maghreb relations based on cooperation, mutual trust, and economic complementarity.

“The time has come for the peoples of the Maghreb to move beyond divisions and work together to build a shared space of prosperity. The region’s youth deserves a future of unity rather than discord, Wehrli said.

The Swiss MP also encouraged the populations in the Tindouf camps to look with confidence toward integrating into the positive dynamic taking place in Morocco.

In this regard, he welcomed the reforms undertaken by the Kingdom to uphold the political, social, and economic rights of all its citizens, including those in the Southern Provinces.

Wehrli reaffirmed that Switzerland and Morocco share common values: peace, tolerance, cooperation, and stability, noting that the Security Council vote reinforces this shared vision of a future built on dialogue and responsibility.
