Deputy Speaker of the House of Councillors Lahcen Haddad held talks on Monday in Rabat with a delegation from the Italian parliamentary intergroup supporting the autonomy initiative in the Moroccan Sahara.

A press release from the House of Councillors stated that the meeting was an opportunity for both parties to praise the strong ties of friendship and cooperation between Morocco and Italy, which are experiencing qualitative momentum in various fields thanks to the High Solicitude of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the common will of both countries’ leaders to elevate bilateral relations to a multidimensional strategic partnership.

On this occasion, Haddad emphasized that the involvement of Italian parliamentarians in the Italian parliamentary intergroup in support of the autonomy initiative in the Moroccan Sahara represents a high-level political and moral commitment, as well as compliance with international legitimacy and political rationality.

He further recalled that the autonomy initiative presented by the Kingdom in 2007 stands as a serious and credible solution, embodying a consensual approach that respects human dignity and guarantees integrating Southern provinces into the national momentum of development, democracy, and stability.

Haddad added that Italy’s support for the UN process and Morocco’s ongoing efforts to achieve a realistic and lasting political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue reflect Rome’s commitment to supporting security and stability in the Mediterranean and African regions, citing strengthened bilateral ties in recent years thanks to cooperation programs, the exchange of experiences and expertise, and the actions of parliamentary friendship and communication groups at the bilateral and multilateral levels.

For their part, members of the Italian parliamentary delegation expressed their satisfaction with the progress and development observed in Southern provinces of the Kingdom, affirming their unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy proposal, which they believe to be the only realistic solution to resolving this artificial regional dispute.

The Italian parliamentary intergroup delegation includes seven members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, representing both the majority and opposition parties.
