Speaker of the House of Councillors Mohamed Ould Errachid held talks on Friday at the House’s headquarters with Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of Burundi Gervais Ndirakobuca, who is on a working visit to Morocco to take part in the Conference of the Association of African Senates, recently hosted by the House.
On this occasion, Ould Errachid highlighted strong fraternal ties between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Burundi, expressing his deep appreciation for Burundi’s support for the election of the House of Councillors to the presidency of the Association of African Senates, reflecting confidence in the African leadership of Morocco’s legislative institution, according to a press release from the House.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to examine prospects for bilateral cooperation. Ould Errachid and Ndirakobuca underscored historical ties between Morocco and Burundi and reaffirmed their shared determination to elevate them to a multidimensional strategic partnership capable of supporting ongoing regional and international developments.
Ould Errachid then praised the consistent stance of the Republic of Burundi in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity, in line with international legality, and proposed the establishment of a joint commission to promote institutional cooperation and the exchange of expertise.
For his part, Ndirakobuca congratulated Ould Errachid on the election of the House of Councillors to the presidency of the Association of African Senates, wishing him success in his duties.
The Burundian official also reaffirmed his country’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with Morocco, commending Morocco’s advanced experience in governance and decentralization, and highlighting the importance of developing decentralized cooperation through exchanges between local authorities.
He further reiterated Burundi’s support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, referring to relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions endorsing the autonomy plan as a serious and credible solution to the dispute.
