ECJ Ruling: Croatia Supports Continuation of EU-Morocco Partnership

Croatia has expressed support for the continuation of the EU-Morocco partnership in the wake of the European Court of Justice’s hostile verdict against the Brussels-Rabat agriculture and fisheries agreements.

“As part of the overall cooperation between the EU and Morocco, Croatia remains committed to the continuation of the strategic partnership between the two parties in all mutually agreed areas,” Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The country also stressed its commitment to enhancing bilateral and multilateral exchanges with Morocco within the framework of friendly relations between the two countries.

On Friday last week, the court ruled that the European Commission “violated the right of self-determination of Western Sahara’s population” by concluding trade agreements with Morocco that included products from the disputed territory.

“The consent of the people of Western Sahara to the implementation… is a condition for the validity of the decisions by which the (EU) Council approved those agreements on behalf of the European Union,” the court stated, suggesting that consultations regarding the agreements did not engage the “people of Western Sahara.”

Morocco responded to the court’s ruling, saying that it contained legal errors and suspicious mistakes. The ministry further argued that this indicates a “complete misunderstanding of the realities of the case, if not a blatant political bias.”

The European Union also renewed its commitment to its partnership with Morocco, adding that it seeks to uphold its long-standing, strategic, and mutually beneficial relationship with Rabat.

“The EU reiterates the high value it attaches to its strategic partnership with Morocco, which is long-standing, wide-ranging, and deep,” the statement said.

Many countries have expressed support for the EU-Morocco partnership, including Austria, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal.
