Algeria’s frustration is mounting as European Union countries continue to express support for Morocco in the wake of the recent hostile ruling by the European Court of Justice seeking to invalidate trade agreements between Rabat and Brussels.
A report by Algeria’s state news agency APS cited on Saturday “informed sources” as indicating the Algerian Foreign Ministry summoned ambassadors from European countries to protest their countries’ dismissal of the EU court’s ruling.
According to the sources, the ambassadors were notably “asked to provide explanations regarding the statements made by their countries” concerning the court’s ruling.
In response, the sources claimed, the ambassadors said that the statements “do not signify their opposition to the decisions adopted by the court on their intention to disregard them in the future.”
These claims made by Algerian sources contradict numerous statements from EU countries and members of the European Parliament (MEPs) regarding the ruling.
Since the EU court released its verdict, many EU countries and MEPs have openly rejected the court’s decision and instead expressed their unwavering commitment to maintain strong cooperation between Morocco and the EU.
Countries like France, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Hungary and many others have reaffirmed their support for the EU-Morocco partnership, advocating for further deepening ties with Morocco.
The French Foreign Ministry earlier this month reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s efforts in Western Sahara, saying that it would not comment on the court’s judicial decisions.
“In any case, France reaffirms its unwavering commitment to its exceptional partnership with Morocco and its determination to continue deepening it,” it said.
Spanish Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Luis Planas likewise maintained that Spain will remain committed to boosting its stable and strategic relations with Morocco.
“If anyone believes that a ruling by the Court of Justice is going to call into question the stability of Morocco’s relationship with Spain or with the European Union, they are mistaken,” Planas told reporters.
This is not the first time that Algeria has expressed anger over the ongoing EU support for deepening its partnership agreements with Rabat.
“What is most surprising is to hear, while we follow the reactions to the decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union, member states of that same institution trying to convince us that trade agreements take precedence over everything when it comes to Western Sahara,” Algerian Affairs Minister Ahmed Attaf said earlier this week.
All these “fabrications are justified by strategic relations with the Kingdom of Morocco,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, both Morocco and the EU Commission have responded to the ECJ ruling by reaffirming their determination to continue boosting ties.
“The content of this decision contains obvious legal errors and suspicious factual mistakes,” the Moroccan Foreign Ministry commented in response to the ruling, arguing that this indicates a complete misunderstanding of the realities of the case, “if not a blatant political bias.”
Rabat will not accept any deal disregarding its territorial integrity and national unity, the ministry added.
