Morocco is positioning itself as one of the most competitive countries in the renewable energy sector, according to Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV during the 61st Munich Security Conference (MSC-2025), Benali talked about Morocco’s growing role in the global renewable energy market.
“We are witnessing a reconfiguration of value chains where the most competitive players are emerging. I am convinced that Morocco is among the highly competitive countries capable of establishing itself in the global renewable energy market,” Benali said on Bloomberg’s “Horizons Middle East and Africa” program.
Benali’s comments come amid a larger discussion on the future of global investments in renewable energy. The minister expressed the importance of a structured plan to finance the energy transition, noting that the competitiveness of emerging players now hinges on their ability to adapt to new green energy value chains.
With over 15 years of experience in developing renewable energy and over 30 years in attracting private investments, Morocco has seen significant growth in the sector. These efforts have been key to modernizing the country’s energy infrastructure, as well as driving innovation in clean energy technologies.
Morocco has already surpassed its initial target of 42% renewable energy capacity in its energy mix and now aims to reach 52% by 2030.
Leila Benali pointed out that annual investments in renewable energy have tripled, while those in electrical networks have increased fivefold.
The minister also recalled Morocco’s strategy to become a key player in regional energy integration. The country aims to strengthen its position as a corridor connecting Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic for energy trade and cooperation.
Benali also touched upon Morocco’s forward-thinking strategy in the emerging green hydrogen sector. The country is creating a conducive environment for international investors, supported by a robust regulatory framework and expanding infrastructure.
In this way, Morocco is establishing itself as a frontrunner in green hydrogen development, with multiple international consortiums already signaling their intent to invest in this critical area.
The Munich Security Conference 2025, a major platform for foreign policy and international security discussions, is taking place from February 14 to 16 in Munich.
The event features heads of state, diplomats, political leaders, and experts from over 110 countries, focusing on global security challenges, including governance, climate security, and regional conflicts.
