The 2nd African Climate Summit (ASC2), held on September 8-10 in Addis Ababa, spotlighted the climate initiatives launched by Morocco.
In the Final Declaration following this summit, African Heads of State and Government highlighted the relevance of the three African Climate Commissions, launched on the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI at COP22 in Marrakech in 2016.
Recalling the structuring role of the Climate Commissions of the Congo Basin, the Sahel, and African Island States, they urged the international community to provide growing and sustained support to “accelerate and expand the implementation of African climate initiatives, including these three Commissions launched at COP22,” in accordance with Decision Dec.855 (XXXVI) of the AU Summit of February 2023.
The Summit also welcomed the progress made under the African Adaptation Initiative (AAI) and the African Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI), as well as the African Agriculture Adaptation Initiative (AAA), also launched at COP22 at the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which aims to reinforce the resilience of African agriculture to the effects of climate change, with a focus on sustainable soil management, access to water for irrigation, and the adoption of appropriate agricultural technologies.
The African Climate Summit brought together senior African and international officials, as well as institutional, financial, and civil society actors involved in the fight against climate change.
Morocco took part in this meeting through a delegation led by Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the African Union and the UNECA Mohamed Arrouchi.
