Morocco is establishing itself as a close, reliable, and strategic partner for the European Union, the EU’s High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) Kaja Kallas said on Thursday in Rabat.
During a joint press briefing with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita, following their talks, Kallas highlighted strong ties between Morocco and the EU, especially as the European Union remains the Kingdom’s leading trading partner as well as its main foreign investor, noting that trade has increased fivefold over the past 26 years.
“The foundations of our partnership are already solid, and we are determined to strengthen them further,” she stated.
In this regard, she recalled Bourita’s visit to Brussels last January, following which EU foreign ministers approved an initiative aimed at intensifying cooperation with the Kingdom, with the aim of transforming this political commitment into concrete results for the benefit of citizens and businesses on both sides.
This strengthened partnership focuses in particular on strategic areas such as the green transition, education, investment, access to skills, entrepreneurship, and improving the business climate.
Furthermore, Kallas praised Morocco’s essential role in developing cooperation in the Mediterranean, expressing the EU’s appreciation for the Kingdom’s contribution to the Pact for the Mediterranean, particularly through the organization of a high-level meeting last September.
She also spoke of discussing security issues with Bourita, notably the fight against terrorism, maritime security, and resilience to hybrid threats, in preparation for the EU-Mediterranean Regional Security Forum scheduled for later this year. Talks also focused on ways to establish a new strategic partnership encompassing trade, investment, and migration, with the aim of taking relations between Morocco and the European Union to a higher level, she concluded.
