Morocco has reached a major milestone in the gaming sector, moving beyond the simple logic of entertainment to work toward the local development of this industry, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid said Sunday in Rabat.

Speaking at a meeting organized as part of the third edition of the Morocco Gaming Expo (MGE 2026), Bensaid stressed that video games are no longer limited to an economic dimension, but have now become a unifying social space capable of bringing young people together around shared passions and transforming this enthusiasm into a promising economic industry.

The minister also addressed the issue of video game addiction and the concerns it raises among families, noting that the ministry is carrying out collective action with several partners, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), alongside families.

The aim, he noted, is to develop this industry within a reassuring framework for families, while encouraging talented young people to pursue specialized academic and professional paths once their potential in this field becomes evident.

For her part, UNICEF Representative in Morocco Laura Bill emphasized the immense potential of the gaming world, which today brings together more than one billion people worldwide, including children.

She recalled that the UN agency advocates for a safe and protective gaming environment for children, while also using gaming as a tool to develop the skills of girls and boys.

She noted that some of these young women entered the sector for the first time and succeeded in changing their families’ perceptions of the industry, while others chose to redirect their careers toward video game design and development.

The meeting, which brought together executive directors of gaming industry companies from Denmark and South Korea, as well as academics, forms part of Morocco’s celebration of National Children’s Day (May 25).
