Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has once again captured global attention with his exceptional performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Atlas Lions’ shot-stopper has earned widespread acclaim from some of the sport’s greatest legendary figures, who have singled him out as one of the standout performers of the tournament.
Casillas impressed
Spanish legend Iker Casillas expressed his immense admiration for Bounou’s tactical intelligence on the pitch.
In Media remarks, the Real Madrid and Spain legend noted that while several goalkeepers have stood out during this tournament, Bounou’s presence has been particularly remarkable. Casillas admitted to being highly impressed by the Moroccan’s composure and precision, especially during the high-pressure penalty shootout that decided the match.
“For me, I liked Bounou during the penalty shootout. It has been a long time since I’ve seen a goalkeeper who doesn’t just dive for the ball, but actually chooses or anticipates the side where the penalty will be shot, and I found that very interesting.” The former world cup winner said.
Saudi praise
Former Saudi Arabian national team goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Deayea has also praised Bounou, calling him the greatest Arab goalkeeper in football history.
Al-Deayea emphasized that the Moroccan international continues to deliver exceptional performances, especially following his standout displays on the World Cup stage.
“Yassine Bounou is the greatest Arab goalkeeper in football history.” Al-Deayea said, in statements reported by the Saudi newspaper Al Wiam.
The former Saudi Goalkeeper went further to explain Bounou’s reliability on both the international and club stages, highlighting his ability to deliver under intense pressure.
“What Bounou delivers with the Moroccan national team and the clubs he has played for confirms his great value; he is a goalkeeper who decides matches in the most difficult moments and is characterized by a high consistency in level.” He added.
Al-Deayea’s praise came right after Bounou’s brilliant performance against the Netherlands. The goalkeeper played a crucial role in sending Morocco to the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 by making decisive saves during the penalty shootout.
Following their historic victory over the Oranje, Morocco will move on to the Round of 16 to face co-hosts Canada this Saturday at the Houston Stadium.
