The Embassy of Morocco in France has condemned an anti-Morocco campaign marked by serious and unacceptable incidents targeting Moroccan symbols during the country’s World Cup journey.
In a statement, the embassy denounced the unacceptable incidents that took place on July 4 in the Quatre-Chemins district of Aubervilliers following the FIFA World Cup game between Morocco and Canada.
The embassy said documented and authenticated evidence shows the Moroccan flag was torn down, burned, and publicly desecrated by individuals chanting slogans that indicate they were of Algerian origin.
The statement described the acts as unacceptable, adding that such behavior constitutes a serious attack on an official symbol of Morocco’s sovereignty and national unity.
The embassy also cited other anti-Morocco incidents, including verbal abuse and intimidation attempts by a group of people.
A video that went viral online shows some individuals chanting anti-Morocco slogans, with the embassy stating that similar acts, including those that targeted Morocco’s flag, are deeply offensive to Moroccans living in France and all those who uphold the values of respect, dignity, and peaceful coexistence.
The embassy filed a complaint with the French authorities to ensure all those responsible are held accountable.
It also thanked the French authorities and security services, reaffirming its commitment to preserving public order and respecting the laws of the French Republic.
The Moroccan embassy also thanked and commended what it described as the sense of responsibility demonstrated by Moroccan nationals living in France, and how they remained faithful to the values of respect and fraternity that characterize the friendship between Morocco and France.
“Sporting celebrations should remain moments of joy, unity, and mutual respect,” the embassy said, noting that they should never be exploited or manipulated to justify insults, provocations, verbal violence, vandalism, or acts of hatred.
