A bilateral cooperation agreement was signed on Saturday in Larache between the Royal Moroccan Triathlon Federation (FRMTI) and its Spanish counterpart (FETRI), marking a new step in strengthening ties between the two countries in the field of triathlon.
The agreement was concluded on the sidelines of the Larache International Triathlon, held from July 3 to 5, and aims to establish a strategic partnership focused on the exchange of expertise and mutual support across various aspects of the sport.
Under the terms of the agreement, both federations will collaborate on improving athletic performance, enhancing technical supervision of triathletes, and strengthening training programs for coaches, referees, and competition organizers.
The partnership also extends to the development of sports clubs and triathlon schools, with particular emphasis on training and education within these structures.
It further regulates exchanges between the two federations, including participation of Moroccan representatives in Spanish events and Spanish representatives in competitions hosted in Morocco.
A joint committee will be established to oversee the implementation of the agreement and ensure the effective coordination of cooperative initiatives at the organizational, economic, and sporting levels.
Speaking to MAP, FRMTI President Majid Amahroq highlighted the significance of the agreement, noting that it will enable Morocco to benefit from Spain’s extensive experience in triathlon. Spain is considered a global leader in the discipline, boasting world and Olympic champions, he explained.
Amahroq emphasized that the partnership will facilitate the exchange of administrative and technical expertise, contribute to the training of Moroccan officials, and enhance the skills of coaches and referees. On the sporting front, Moroccan athletes will gain access to training camps and competitions in Spain.
He also pointed to immediate applications of the agreement, including the participation of two international Spanish referees in the 19th African Triathlon Cup held in Larache, as well as the involvement of Moroccan referees and athletes in an upcoming competition in Pontevedra, Spain.
For his part, FETRI President José Hidalgo Martín said the agreement formalizes an already established relationship between the two federations, reflecting their shared commitment to collaboration and knowledge exchange.
He added that the main objective is to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in developing triathlon competitions, training technical staff, and preparing elite athletes to compete at the highest international level.
Martín also stressed the importance of continuing this cooperation on a global scale, noting that it would be mutually beneficial for both federations.
Larache is currently hosting hundreds of triathletes from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and beyond, who are competing in the African Triathlon Cup. The event serves as a qualifier for the 2028 Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles.
