The government of Ghana has expressed strong support for Morocco’s Autonomy plan offered for the Sahara under the Kingdom’s sovereignty saying the plan is “the only realistic and lasting basis for reaching a mutually acceptable solution” to the Sahara issue.
The supportive stand comes in the joint statement issued following the talks held Tuesday in Accra between the foreign minister of this West African country Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.
The Ghanian minister also welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 which supports the efforts engaged by UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara to advance the UN-led political process taking as basis Morocco’s autonomy proposal, in order to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution to the five-decade conflict.
Mr. Bourita, who arrived Tuesday in Accra to participate in the 2nd meeting of the Morocco-Ghana Joint Cooperation Committee, conferred with Ghanian peer on ways of boosting cooperation in industry, hydrocarbons, mining, energy efficiency, customs, postal services and agriculture.
The two ministers welcomed the growing presence of Moroccan businesses in Ghana in banking, housing, and infrastructure, and encouraged Ghanaian investments in Morocco. They stressed the need to foster public-private partnerships particularly in emerging fields such as green energy, logistics, and the digital economy.
Both ministers reaffirmed their shared determination to deepen cooperation in priority sectors, and expressed ambition to extend the partnership into industry, hydrocarbons and mining, energy efficiency, customs cooperation, postal services and agriculture.
Acknowledging the commercial potential between the two countries, Bourita and Ablakwa agreed to encourage economic missions, business-to-business meetings, trade fairs and exhibitions in a bid to boost exchanges and improve the trade balance between Morocco and Ghana. To that end, the two sides agreed to facilitate the periodic organization of a Ghana-Morocco Economic and Investment Forum, to be led by the private sector.
The Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also hailed the Royal initiatives for the emergence and development of Africa and welcomed the positive momentum initiated within the framework of the African Atlantic States Process and the commitment to promote the African Atlantic space as a strategic platform for cooperation, stability, and shared prosperity.
Furthermore, the Ghanaian side commended the Royal Initiative aimed at facilitating the access of landlocked Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean, viewing it as a concrete expression of African solidarity and active South-South cooperation.
Relations between Morocco and Ghana are experiencing a “golden era” of strategic cooperation, marked by a major diplomatic shift on the Sahara issue, growing commercial investments, and streamlined travel policies.
