King Mohammed VI has appointed Yazid Aradi as the new Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Ulema.

The monarch, who is the chairman of the religious body, also received the former Secretary-General of the council, Mohamed Yessef, at the royal palace in Rabat.

During the reception, the King decorated the former Secretary General with the Order of the Throne in recognition of his distinguished service.

In a statement from the royal cabinet, the monarch issued directives during the appointment of the new secretary general, emphasizing the preservation of Morocco’s religious constants and the promotion of moderation and balance in Islamic teachings.

The Ulema Council is the top religious body in the country. The role of the institution, created in 1981, is to oversee the country’s religious affairs and issue official fatwas as well as promote moderate Islamic practices.

The Institution acts as the sole authority for religious guidance.

Among the central roles of the council is to issue detailed fatwas to clarify obligations under Islamic law.

In 2025, King Mohammed VI ordered the council to issue a detailed fatwa to clarify Zakat obligations under Islamic law.

The fatwa aims to guide citizens on questions surrounding Zakat, particularly regarding new forms of income in today’s economy.

A year earlier, the monarch also directed the council to undertake a comprehensive review of proposals put forth by the Family Code Revision Authority. The directive aims to ensure that the proposed revisions to the family code align with the principles and precepts of Islam and its inclusive objectives.
