Morocco’s Supreme Council of the Judicial Power (CSPJ) and the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq concluded, on Thursday in Baghdad, a memorandum of understanding defining the guiding principles of their cooperation, in order to promote better mutual understanding on judicial working methods and legal practices.
Signed by the First President of the Court of Cassation and President Delegate of the CSPJ, Mohamed Abdennabaoui, and the President of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq, Faiq Zaidan, this memorandum reflects the shared will to step up judicial cooperation and stems from a convergence of views in favor of promoting justice as an essential pillar for the establishment of the rule of law and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, the CSPJ said in a press release.
The same source pointed out that this memorandum provides for the sharing of information and data on the legal system, the periodic exchange of visits, the hosting of training sessions for magistrates, as well as conferences and seminars on topics of mutual interest.
It also covers the establishment of a twinning arrangement between the Moroccan Court of Cassation and the Iraqi Federal Court of Cassation, as well as the exchange of publications and case law decisions between the two institutions, with a view to sharing best practices.
In addition, Abdennabaoui, accompanied by a delegation from the Council and the chargé d’affaires at the Moroccan Embassy in Baghdad, was received by Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani and the Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.
The two meetings provided an opportunity to review the historical ties between the two brotherly countries and to highlight the essential role that justice plays in both countries in consolidating security and stability and protecting rights and freedoms.
