By reaffirming the recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, in confirmation of the position communicated by President Donald Trump to HM King Mohammed VI, the United States upholds “the consistency” of its stance, while hailing Morocco’s role in peace and prosperity under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, U.S. Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart declared.
Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara, as reiterated by the Secretary of State, “upholds the position adopted by President Trump during his first term.” This stance also includes the recognition of “the importance of Morocco’s role, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, on issues of paramount importance, not only for the United States and Morocco, but also for the entire region and the world,” the influential member of the U.S. House of Representatives told MAP.
During a meeting on Tuesday in Washington between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the latter “reiterated that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.”
“The only credible and serious plan is the one presented by Morocco. The Secretary of State made it clear: the only realistic and serious basis for achieving a lasting solution is the Moroccan autonomy initiative. The U.S. President recognizes it as such, and the Secretary of State strongly reaffirmed it during his meeting with the Kingdom’s Foreign Minister,” Díaz-Balart added.
Reacting to the U.S. State Department’s readout following the meeting between Bourita and Rubio, the Republican congressman noted that “both parties reaffirmed the importance of the leadership of President Trump and HM King Mohammed VI in promoting regional peace and prosperity.”
“The role played by Morocco in the cause of peace in the Middle East is fundamental. It is just as essential for the prosperity of the Moroccan and American peoples,” said Mario Díaz-Balart, who is currently serving his 12th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
For him, “it came as no surprise, it was rather encouraging, to hear the Secretary of State reiterate the importance of the strategic relationship between Morocco and the United States, the vision upheld by the Kingdom, and its leadership.”
“This reflects the consistency of President Trump’s position, who has always been clear on this matter,” he continued, affirming that for the United States, this relationship is “strategic, fostering regional stability, peace, and prosperity.”
In this regard, the congressman praised the appointment by the U.S. President of the new U.S. Ambassador to Rabat, Richard Duke Buchan III, noting that this appointment was accompanied by a commitment from the U.S. administration to strengthen bilateral cooperation at all levels.
“I always remember that the Kingdom of Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States. It is the longest uninterrupted diplomatic relationship the United States maintains in the world. And it is very encouraging to see that this relationship continues to strengthen, thanks to the enlightened Royal leadership on key issues,” he concluded.
