Anderlecht’s promising young defender, Ismaïl Baouf, has made a significant decision for his international future. The 18-year-old has opted to represent Morocco, turning his back on Belgium where he had previously played at various youth levels.
The young defender recently got a taste of Moroccan football, featuring for the U20 side in a friendly match against France. While that match was not officially binding, it appears to have solidified Baouf’s decision to switch allegiances.
Despite his tender age, Baouf has already made a notable impact at Anderlecht. He has accumulated 352 minutes of playing time this season for RSCA Futures, the club’s B-team currently languishing at the bottom of the Belgian second division.
Prior to his decision, Baouf was a regular fixture in the Belgian youth setup. He even captained the U19 side. However, the allure of representing Morocco, a nation with a rich footballing heritage, proved too strong to resist.
Baouf’s father, Rachid, confirmed his son’s decision to Al Araby, expressing pride in his choice. “Ismaïl chose Morocco with all his heart and soul,” he said. “We are very proud of him. Hopefully, he can soon show his worth on the international stage.”
With this move, Morocco gains a talented young defender who could potentially contribute to the Atlas Lions’ future success. Anderlecht, meanwhile, will be hoping that Baouf continues to develop and becomes a key player for their first team in the years to come.
