In a decisive 4-0 victory in La Liga’s Clasico, FC Barcelona triumphed over Real Madrid in an enthralling clash yesterday evening. However, the match was marred by racist insults directed at Barcelona players Lamine Jamal and Alejandro Baldé from the stands of the Santiago Bernabéu.
Today, Real Madrid issued a strong condemnation of the racist behavior exhibited by some of its supporters during yesterday’s Clasico.
“Real Madrid firmly condemns any form of racist, xenophobic, or violent behavior in football and sport, and deeply regrets the insults directed last night by a few supporters in one corner of the stadium,” the club stated in a public release.
This response comes after videos circulated on social media depicting Real Madrid fans shouting racist slurs at the two Spanish internationals, including calling Jamal “Puto Negro,” while they celebrated his third goal of the match.

The reigning Spanish champion has initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for the racist insults. The Spanish football league has also condemned these “racist insults and gestures,” vowing to file a complaint and reaffirming its commitment to eradicating hate in stadiums.
Despite efforts from clubs and authorities, racism remains a persistent issue in Spanish football. Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior has been a frequent target since his arrival in 2018, with many incidents going unpunished. Recently, four individuals were arrested for inciting hatred against him during an Atlético Madrid match.
In June 2023, four Atlético ultras received two-year stadium bans for hanging a mannequin resembling Vinicius from a bridge, with their criminal case ongoing. A Mallorca supporter was sentenced to 12 months in prison and a three-year stadium ban for racially abusing Vinicius and Samuel Chukwueze.
Both Jamal and Baldé have garnered attention not only for their on-field performance but also for becoming targets of discrimination.
As discussions about racism in football continue, many hope for stronger measures to combat this persistent problem.
