The Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council, also known as GCC, has renewed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara.

GCC reaffirmed its position at the 45th summit held in Kuwait. In its final statement on Sunday, the GCC commended the UN’s Security Council’s Resolution 2756 adopted in October, renewing the mandate of peacekeeping operation MINURSO in the Sahara region.

The resolution, which received 12 votes in favor while two abstained, extended the mandate of MINURSO by one year until October 2025.

Russia, a UN permanent member, and Mozambique (a non-permanent member) are the two countries that abstained from the vote. Algeria, a non-permanent member, boycotted the vote.

At the vote session, Algeria proposed hostile amendments to the draft solution, which the UN Security Council rejected.

Despite its maneuvers, the new resolution shattered Algeria’s hope to distance itself from the dispute– calling upon all the parties to “negotiate under the Secretary-General’s auspices without preconditions and in good faith.”

During the summit, the final statement stressed the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the GCC-Morocco cooperation and partnership.

Morocco maintains a strong and solid partnership with all countries in the GCC, which have demonstrated their commitment to the country’s territorial integrity.

One of the notable examples of this unwavering support is the UAE, which further demonstrated its commitment by opening a consulate general in the southern region of Morocco, showing its backing of Morocco’s sovereignty over the region.

Other GCC countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and more have also frequently renewed their support by endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible political solution to resolve the dispute over Western Sahara.

In October, Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s representative to the UN reiterated his country’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as a “constructive initiative” and an “objective” basis for a realistic and sustainable solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara dispute.

He also expressed support for the UN-led political process and efforts seeking to facilitate a sustainable political solution through compromise  in accordance with Security Council resolutions – including Resolution 2703.

A solution to the dispute should also be with respect for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said, commending efforts by both UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and his envoy Staffan de Mistura.

The same statement has been echoed by all GCC countries.

On October 11, King Mohammed VI celebrated the international support Morocco has been earning, recalling that the Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for reaching a final solution to the dispute within the framework of sovereignty.

He also extended Morocco’s deep appreciation of all its allies and partners for supporting its foremost national cause.
