Morocco’s experience in expanding social protection and funding the health system was highlighted on Tuesday in Nairobi during the Regional Meeting of the Global Health Summit, held in the Kenyan capital through April 29.
Speaking at the Ministerial Dialogue on Health Financing Reform in Africa, held on the sidelines of the meeting, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection Abdelkrim Meziane Belfkih emphasized that Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has embarked on a profound transformation of its national health and social protection system, noting that this new trajectory is part of the New Development Model, which places human capital, social justice, and territorial equity at the heart of national priorities.
Citing major structural reforms undertaken by Morocco, Meziane Belfkih spoke of the expansion of financial protection for citizens against the risk of illness, explaining that the Kingdom has shifted from a model of medical assistance to one of universal insurance coverage.
He stated that over 11 million vulnerable citizens, formerly beneficiaries of a medical aid program, have been integrated into a solidarity-based insurance system for which the State covers the premiums, Meziane Belfkih stated that nearly nine out of ten Moroccans now benefit from coverage under the mandatory health insurance program.
Organized by the Global Health Summit and Aga Khan University, in partnership with the WHO, the Kenyan Ministry of Health, and the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting brings together more than 1,000 delegates from approximately 50 countries to discuss global health challenges ad highlight Africa’s growing contributions to setting health priorities.
