Morocco has set an ambitious timeline for the construction of the Grand Hassan II stadium in Benslimane, a key project in the country’s preparations for the 2030 World Cup.
Minister Delegate for Budget Fouzi Lekjaa said that the stadium is expected to be completed by 2027. He made the announcement during a meeting at the headquarters of the General Confederation of Moroccan Entreprises (CGEM) on Wednesday.
Currently in its initial phase, the Benslimane stadium is designed to meet international standards and will play a key role in Morocco’s efforts to host a successful World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
The stadium is competing to host the opening and final of the world cup, alongside the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid and the Camp Nou in Barcelona, according to a FIFA report.
Morocco’s preparations for the major football event, in addition to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, include a two-phase approach. The first phase focuses on upgrading the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat and the Grand Stade in Tangier, with work expected to be completed within the next two months.
The second phase will include the construction of the Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane, near Casablanca, and upgrades to the stadiums in Marrakech, Fez, and Agadir. Work on these projects will intensify after the 2025 AFCON.
Further speaking about Morocco’s comprehensive strategy for the 2030 World Cup, he said that the project is guided by a detailed plan addressing key areas such as human rights, climate action, energy transition, infrastructure, accommodation, football, mobility, and security.
He said the country has outlined a clear strategy to modernize key airports, with plans to transform the Casablanca airport from a traditional airport that handles point-to-point flights to a “hub airport” that operates as a central connecting point.
In this respect, Lekjaa recalled the agreement the government signed with Royal Air Maroc (RAM) to expand its fleet to 200 aircraft by 2035. This is set to play a crucial role in turning Morocco into a major global hub for air travel ahead of the World Cup.
