International entertainment website National Geographic has dedicated a lengthy report, discussing the mesmerizing tourism assets in Morocco’s wind city of Essaouira.

The North African country has been strengthening its position as a primary destination for many tourists, with many preferring cities like Marrakech,  Fez, Rabat, and Chefchaouen.

But Essaouira’s vibe and vibrant atmosphere, ranging from seafood to Gnaoua music, continue to attract thousands if not millions of tourists on an annual basis.

“Centuries of cultural exchange have made this Moroccan city a haven for lovers of food, music, and design,” the website said, recalling celebrities’ experience — particularly that of Jimi Hendrix.

The old medina, the mellahs, and the colorful rags hanging on the city’s walls are themselves a vibe. Strolling in the old medina’s neighborhoods and smelling artisans’ handmade Moroccan traditional cloths, and the smell of fried fish or tagine can attract not only foreign tourists, but also locals who flock to the city year around — especially during the summer to celebrate Ganaoua music.

National Geographic recalled how the city is not only a refuge for hippies looking for a free-falling, but also for tourists from France, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.

“Today, Essaouira moves to the beat of its own drum — one rattled by the rhythms of Gnawa, a traditional music originally practiced by people brought together by the trans-Saharan slave trade,” the website wrote.

It also recalled that Essaouira is a UNESCO-listed old quarter that tourists can explore on foot.

National Geographic did not hesitate to provide a full two-day schedule for those who aim to explore the city from morning to night.

It advised readers to explore different spots, including Rue Skala, near the history museum Bayt Dakira as well as shops selling different products, including mesmerizing jewellery.

Moroccan destinations like Essaouira, Marrakech, and Fez among others continue to make international headlines for their breathtaking cultural venues and traditions.

The country generated over 17.4 million visitors last year, exceeding the target set for 2026. In just one month, Morocco also attracted over 1.2 million in January this year.

With the remarkable data, converging reports have highlighted how Morocco took over Egypt in terms of tourist arrivals in the past year.

Morocco’s major goal is to attract at least 26 million by 2030.
