The Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange-level weather alert for snowfall and heavy rain in several parts of Morocco on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the forecast, snowfall ranging from 2 to 30 centimeters is expected in areas above 1,800 meters. The affected provinces include Beni Mellal, Azilal, Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, Midelt, and Tinghir, where snow may accumulate between 15-30 cm.
Meanwhile, snowfall between 10-15 cm is expected in Boulemane, Ifrane, and Khenifra, and between 2-8 cm in Figuig, Taroudant, Sefrou, and Chichaoua. The snowfall is expected to begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and continue until 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
In addition to snow, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in several regions. Rainfall of 20-35 millimeters will affect Al Haouz, Ifrane, Khenifra, Azilal, Beni Mellal, and Sefrou from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Safi and Essaouira may witness 15-25 mm of rain between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Similar rainfall levels of 15-25 mm are also expected in Midelt and Errachidia from 6 p.m. on Tuesday to 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
Several regions across the country saw dropping temperatures in recent weeks, with some experiencing rain and snow. The latter is expected to bring some relief in the wake of the water crisis the country is experiencing.
However, the snow and rainfall are still not enough to mitigate the impact of the six years of consecutive drought Morocco has been experiencing.
