President of the Moroccan Human Rights Council (CNDH), Amina Bouayach, has been elected President of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) by unanimous vote.

The election, which the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights oversaw, took place at the United Nations’ Palace of Nations in Geneva.

Bouayach received full support from the alliance’s three other regional groups: the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. This marks the second time an African leader has been chosen to head the global organization, said CNDH in a press release.

The election followed strong backing from the African regional group, NANHRI, which officially nominated Bouayach in January 2025.

Bouayach expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her, saying that the support she has received represents a “great source of motivation.”

“I am honored to take on this responsibility for the next three years,” she remarked, noting that Africa’s return to the GANHRI presidency, after a decade since South Africa last held the position, reflects the continent’s commitment to human rights.

Bouayech added that the role comes with great responsibility, especially in the wake of the current challenges human rights are facing worldwide. She mentioned issues like digital transformation, shrinking civic space, armed conflicts, gender equality, climate change, and economic inequalities.

“We must remain vigilant and work together to ensure that no one is left behind,” she stressed.

Also speaking on the occasion, Joseph Whittal, President of the African Network of National Human Rights Institutions, noted Bouayach’s “exceptional leadership” over the past three years as GANHRI Secretary. Whittal commended her strategic guidance, international representation, and dedication to promoting rights and freedoms at all levels.

For decades, Bouayach has been a tireless advocate for women’s and children’s rights, often speaking out against the injustices they face. She has also worked to improve the rights of marginalized groups around the world.

In recognition of her dedication and leadership, King Mohammed VI appointed her as president of CNDH in 2018.

She has also held significant positions in global human rights organizations, including Vice-President of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights.

In addition, Bouayach has had a robust career in diplomacy, having served as Morocco’s Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia.

With her new role, Bouayach succeeds Qatar’s Maryam Al Attiyah as GANHRI President. Meanwhile, Alison Kilpatrick from Northern Ireland’s Human Rights Commission will take over Bouayach’s former role as GANHRI Secretary.
