Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology announced today that heavy thunderstorms with local hail are expected to hit several provinces across the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Storms producing rainfall between 20 and 30 millimeters will hit the provinces of Figuig, Jerrada, and Oujda-Angad from noon today to Wednesday at 7 a.m.
The same weather will concern Taourirt, Guercif, Taza, Sefrou, Boulemane, Midelt, and Azilal, as well as Al Haouz.
The weather alert comes as Moroccan officials have expressed satisfaction with the recent rainfall that hit Morocco’s provinces in March, contributing to reviving agriculture, the most-affected sector by the six-year-long drought.
On Monday, King Mohammed VI chaired a ministerial council in Rabat, in which he reviewed and assessed Morocco’s agricultural performance amid the drought.
During the ministerial council, Minister of Agriculture Ahmed Bouari reassured the monarch that the rainfall Morocco experienced in recent months had a “very positive impact” on cereal production, autumn and spring crops, as well as fruit trees and vegetation cover.
He also said that the rainfall benefited livestock across the country.
King Mohammed VI, during the council, gave instructions to the government to ensure the success of the herd rebuilding operation at all levels.
He also emphasized the importance of carrying this process professionally in accordance with objective criteria, and to entrust commissions under local authorities to oversee and support management operations.
For his part, Minister of Equipment Nizar Baraka said the average dam filling rate currently stands at 40.3%, adding that this increase allows the mobilization of 6.5 billion cubic meters of water, equivalent to one and a half years of potable water consumption.
