Morocco has issued an orange-level alert warning of a heat wave accompanied by Chergui winds expected from Monday to Friday across several provinces, with temperatures forecast to range between 33°C and 46°C.
According to the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM), extreme heat between 43°C and 46°C is expected throughout the week in the provinces of Taroudant, Tata, Zagora, Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab and Aousserd.
Temperatures ranging from 41°C to 44°C are forecast for Monday and Tuesday in the provinces of Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Larache, Kenitra, Ouezzane, Khemisset, Salé, Skhirate-Temara, Mediouna, Nouaceur, Berrechid, Settat, Benslimane, Khouribga, Meknes, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Beni Mellal, Azilal, Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Rehamna, Marrakech, Sidi Bennour, Guelmim, Youssoufia and Chichaoua.
Lesser but still significant heat, between 33°C and 38°C, will affect on Monday coastal and inland areas such as Rabat, Mohammadia, Casablanca, El Jadida, Essaouira, Safi, El Hajeb, Sefrou, Khenifra, Al Haouz, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Tiznit, Sidi Ifni and Tangier-Assilah.
The alert also indicates that temperatures will peak at around 44°C on Wednesday in the provinces of Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Ouezzane, Khemisset, Khouribga, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Fez, Meknes, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Rehamna, Marrakech and Settat.
The Chergui, a hot and dry wind from the southeast, often exacerbates heat conditions and poses increased risks of wildfires and health issues, particularly in rural and agricultural zones.
