Morocco moved up in the global blueberry export ranking, climbing from seventh to fourth place within a year, Agraria Pe reported.
Morocco exported a record 83,000 tons of blueberries in 2024, a huge increase from just 636 tons in 2009. This growth, averaging 43% per year, reflects the country’s ability to combine natural advantages, advanced farming techniques, and strategic investments to build a competitive and fast-growing industry, says the agricultural platform.
One of Morocco’s biggest strengths is its favorable climate. Mild winters, warm dry summers, and fertile, well-drained soils in regions such as Souss and Oriental allow for multiple harvests each year and high-quality fruit with excellent taste and firmness, Argaria Pe added.
The country’s close proximity to Europe also means fresh blueberries can reach key markets like Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany quickly. This reduces costs and ensures freshness.
The platform noted that the sector has transformed from a small-scale crop in the 1990s into an organized, export-oriented industry.
Investments in modern technology, agricultural practices, and new production areas, including Dakhla and the Atlas Mountains, are expected to extend the harvest season and increase supply for both existing and new markets.
Blueberry exports reached one million tons in 2024 globally, worth about $6.73 billion.
Peru led the market with 31% of global exports, followed by Chile, Spain, Morocco (8%), and the United States (7%).
With ongoing expansion and a growing professional approach from local exporters, Morocco is expected to strengthen its position in both Europe and in emerging markets across Asia and the Middle East.
