The Mayor of Montpellier, Michaël Delafosse, praised the “exemplary” development level achieved by Morocco in various sectors.
“I had the chance last April to visit Morocco, specifically Fez, Rabat, Tangier, Casablanca and Dakhla. I received an unforgettable welcome there and was able to witness all the excellence and innovation of a country that is exemplary in many aspects of development: urban planning, water management, port infrastructure, renewable energy, sports, culture…,” Delafosse told MAP.
The President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole also expressed his satisfaction with the excellent decentralized cooperation with several Moroccan cities.
“Local authorities are an essential link in the diplomacy and the very strong relationship that today unites France and Morocco (…) It is an unbreakable bond that ties us together and connects our populations,” Delafosse stressed, noting that Montpellier has always had “very strong ties” with the Kingdom.
“Many of my fellow citizens are of Moroccan origin or nationality. Their contributions to the life of the city are numerous and valuable, and the partnerships and cooperation between our territory and Moroccan territories are longstanding and vibrant,” he said, recalling the twinning of Montpellier with the city of Fez, established in 2003 and renewed during his recent visit to encompass new areas such as urban planning, transport, and sports, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup set to be hosted in Morocco.
Speaking about decentralized cooperation with Dakhla, Delafosse recalled that during his visit he had the opportunity to meet with local authorities and express his support for economic development projects driven by Montpellier-based stakeholders, such as MGH Energy’s initiative in decarbonized energy production, notably for air transport.
He also stressed that cooperation with Dakhla is set to be bolstered in the fields of sports, culture, and tourism, announcing an upcoming visit this autumn to the southern provinces city by a delegation from the Montpellier Chamber of Commerce and Industry to implement these projects.
