Police officers in Tetouan, in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), seized 26,550 narcotic pills and arrested two suspects on Wednesday evening.

The suspects, aged 20 and 25, were caught red-handed in possession of large quantities of illegal drugs. A search led to the discovery of the pills, which included several types of controlled medical substances.

Police officers also found 235 grams of cocaine and 10 batteries for drones believed to be used in cross-border drug smuggling operations.

According to the police, the suspects are believed to be part of a criminal network involved in international drug trafficking using drones.

The two men are now under judicial investigation supervised by the competent public prosecutor’s office. Authorities are working to identify other individuals connected to the network and to uncover the full scope of their criminal activities.

Drug smuggling attempts are common in Morocco’s northern regions, particularly near cities such as Tetouan and Tangier, due to their proximity to Europe across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Criminal groups often use innovative methods, including drones and small boats, to transport drugs to Spain and other destinations.

Moroccan security services have intensified operations to combat drug trafficking and organized crime in recent years, leading to several large seizures and arrests.

The use of drones is expected to become a growing concern for authorities, as traffickers increasingly rely on them to bypass traditional surveillance at border points.

The latest operation highlights Morocco’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its fight against drug-related crimes and dismantle networks that threaten national and regional security.
