New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani surprised supporters of the Atlas Lions who were watching on Sunday the opening game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) between the Moroccan national team and Comoros in a Moroccan restaurant in the city.
Enjoying authentic Moroccan food in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and joy, the first Muslim mayor of New York shared the passion for football with Moroccan fans in the Astoria neighborhood, where the restaurant is located and which is home to a large Arab community.
“We had the honor of hosting Zohran Mamdani during the Morocco match against Comoros,” the restaurant owner wrote on social media, where a video of the NYC Mayor-elect watching the Moroccan national team’s match was widely shared.
This moment of shared experience with Zohran Mamdani, who will assume his duties as Mayor of New York City on January 1st, reflects the respect for the cultures that coexist in the most populous U.S. city.
On this occasion, the Moroccan supporters, dressed in the national colors, proudly watched the impressive opening ceremony of the 35th edition of the AFCON, which took place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. They also celebrated with emotion and joy the victory of Ayoub El Kaabi’s teammates against Comoros.
