Field efforts deployed by public authorities are progressing at a steady pace in Ksar El Kebir, ahead of the expected weather disturbances starting Monday.
Evacuation operations of citizens towards neighboring cities are ongoing without interruption since the end of the previous week, as part of a global mobilization of local authorities, as well as the different actors, mainly civil and military authorities.
This situation has visibly impacted the rhythm of everyday life in the city, which has lost a large part of its usual dynamic, in anticipation of worsened climate perturbations during the next few days.
Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has forecast, in a red level weather alert, heavy rain with occasional thunderstorms, which could reach 100 to 150 mm, in several provinces within the Loukkos river basin, mainly Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Ouezzane and Larache, on Wednesday, from midnight to 11:00 p.m..
During these exceptional circumstances, local authorities are providing support for several citizens wishing to evacuate their homes temporarily in Ksar El Kebir, for fear of a new rise in the waters of the Loukkos River, which could once again flood several neighborhoods of the city.
In this respect, important efforts are spent to assist the population of the zones exposed to the risk of flood to move to safe areas, in or away from the city. This operation, which is still ongoing, has mobilized more than 70 buses and several trains to transport citizens wishing to travel to neighboring cities.
With the exception of the neighborhoods in higher altitude, residents have left their homes and shopkeepers have closed their stores in the areas at risk, leading to a sharp slowdown in life in this usually bustling city, considered a gateway between the north and the center of the Kingdom.
