NGO Africa Culture International highlighted on Monday, during the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, the experience of the Institution of the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Morocco in promoting economic and social rights, particularly in the Southern Provinces.
In a statement delivered by Dr. Cherif Laroussi under agenda item 2, devoted to the debate on the report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the NGO praised the pioneering role of African Ombudsman institutions in strengthening good governance and the rule of law.
It emphasized that Morocco’s Ombudsman Institution, as an independent body, contributes to the protection of fundamental rights through mechanisms of prevention, mediation, and dialogue between citizens and public authorities.
According to the NGO, this dynamic is also evident in Morocco’s Southern regions, where the institution’s regional representation has become a key driver in ensuring the effective enjoyment of rights such as health care, education, and employment.
The speaker underscored the particular attention given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, and persons with disabilities, as well as the efforts undertaken to promote a culture of human rights and strengthen civil society’s capacity to safeguard rights related to public services.
He stressed that reinforcing independent national institutions constitutes a fundamental pillar for preventing violations before they occur and for establishing a sustainable approach grounded in cooperation and accountability.
The NGO called for the sharing of African best practices and for increased support for national initiatives that promote institutional mediation and the effective protection of human rights.
