Thanks to its status as a “reliable and credible” partner of the Unites States, Morocco has successfully transformed its long-standing friendship with America into a multidimensional strategic alliance, said Moroccan-American political scientist Mohamed Daâdaoui at the first international edition of the MAP Town Hall, held Thursday in Washington.
“By combining security effectiveness, economic attractiveness, and regional leadership, the Kingdom confirms its status as a reliable and credible partner of the United States,” said Daâdaoui, who was speaking at a panel organized as part of this high-level meeting, which celebrated 250 years of the exceptional historical partnership and alliance between Rabat and Washington.
This professor and chair of Political Science, History, and Philosophy & Rhetoric at Oklahoma City University noted that this alliance does not stem from recent geopolitical circumstances, but is rather rooted in a history of friendship based on mutual respect and active cooperation.
In 1777, Sultan Sidi Mohammed Benabdallah sealed the first act of diplomatic recognition of the young American Republic, and today, the 1786 Moroccan-U.S. Treaty of Peace and Friendship remains the oldest unbroken agreement still in force in American diplomatic history, he said, adding that this historical depth provides a solid foundation for exploring new avenues of partnership.
“Today, the two countries are exploring joint investment opportunities in strategic sectors, particularly critical minerals, which are essential for energy transition and advanced industries,” Daâdaoui pointed out.
The United States’ recognition of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its Sahara, consistently reaffirmed by U.S. diplomacy, shows the Kingdom’s current position not only as a historical ally but, above all, as a partner for the future, he underlined.
Held under the theme “Kingdom of Morocco – United States of America: From historic partnership to strategic alliance”, the first international edition of the MAP Town Hall takes place within a context marked by renewed strategic momentum in relations between Rabat and Washington, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Donald Trump.
The meeting brought together former senior U.S. officials, experts from leading policy institutions, as well as distinguished academic voices to foster a high-level discussion of the trajectory and future of the Moroccan-American alliance.
