Means to reinforce parliamentary cooperation between Morocco and Chile were the focus of talks held Tuesday in Rabat between Deputy Speaker of the House of Councillors Lahcen Haddad and a delegation of Chilean lawmakers led by president of the Chile-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group Maria Catalina del Real Mihovilovic.

Moroccan-Chilean ties witnessed a rapid evolution since the historic 2004 visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Chile, which stamped a major turning point in bilateral cooperation and contributed to establishing strategic partnership between the two countries, Haddad said, as quoted in a press release from the House of Councillors.

On this occasion, he highlighted the role played by the legislative body in supporting this momentum through increased exchange of visits, the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the House of Councillors and the Chilean Senate, and bolstering the work of parliamentary friendship groups.

Cooperation between the two countries is part of the Kingdom’s strategic vision to reinforce its presence in Latin America and the Pacific, he noted, highlighting the importance of Morocco’s membership, as an observer, in the Pacific Alliance, as well as the Atlantic initiatives launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to promote cooperation between Africa and Latin America.

In this context, Haddad emphasized that the two countries hold promising assets for developing their partnership in several priority sectors, such as sustainable agriculture, agri-food industries, water resource management, renewable energy, the blue economy, logistics services, and the digital economy.

The Deputy Speaker of the Upper House also commended the central role of parliaments in bolstering this momentum through promoting legislative frameworks that encourage investment and strengthen legal security.

Welcoming Chile’s positive stances—at both the governmental and parliamentary levels—in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity, Haddad praised Chile’s support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, particularly through the 2018 parliamentary resolution and the January 2025 Senate resolution, as well as the positions expressed by the Chilean government, which illustrate the growing international support for the autonomy plan as the most serious, realistic, and credible basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

For her part, Del Real Mihovilovic reaffirmed the Chilean Parliament’s commitment to further strengthen relations of cooperation and friendship with the House of Councillors.

In this regard, she commended the major development projects and institutional reforms undertaken by the Kingdom under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, adding that her delegation aspires to broaden the scope of parliamentary cooperation, exchange legislative expertise and experiences, and reinforce coordination on issues of common interest, in the service of both countries and their friendly peoples.
