Morocco’s leadership in road safety at the regional and international levels is the result of the Enlightened Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has made the protection of the right to life and the promotion of road safety a strategic priority, Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh said Monday in New York.
Speaking at the General Assembly’s High-Level Meeting on Improving Road Safety to accelerate progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Kayouh emphasized that His Majesty the King’s vision has also helped cement Morocco’s position as a leading international player and reliable partner in this field.
In this regard, the Kingdom has developed an Integrated National Strategy for 2030, fully aligned with the Global Road Safety Plan, the minister noted, adding that this strategy is based in particular on good governance, law enforcement, infrastructure development, education and training, as well as the integration of modern technologies, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
Kayouh also emphasized that the Kingdom’s hosting of the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, held in February 2025 in Marrakesh, marked a historic milestone in mobilizing the international community.
The conference culminated in the adoption of the Marrakech Declaration, which serves as a roadmap to accelerate the implementation of international commitments on road safety.
The Marrakech conference was also marked by the launch of the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award, “which embodies the High Royal Vision to encourage innovation, promote best practices, and strengthen international cooperation to save lives.”
The General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Road Safety concluded with the adoption of the Progress Declaration, marking an important milestone at the international level.
This Declaration incorporated all of the amendments proposed by the Kingdom, notably regarding the integration of the Marrakesh Declaration into this UN document, as well as highlighting the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakesh. The Declaration also commends the Royal initiative to launch the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award.
These developments reflect an unprecedented recognition by the United Nations of the Kingdom’s leading role in the field of road safety and its active contribution to strengthening global governance in this area.
The Meeting was attended by, among others, Morocco’s UN Permanent Representative, Ambassador Omar Hilale, and Director of the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) Benacer Boulaajoul.
Initiated by the Presidency of the UN General Assembly and the World Health Organization (WHO), this High-Level Meeting is held under the theme “Scaling up and accelerating implementation of commitments to halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.”
