A major fire broke out Sunday at Casablanca’s Kriaa market, causing extensive material damage and destroying 15 stores, according to local authorities.
The fire started late in the afternoon and quickly spread through the well-known market, prompting a large emergency response. Shops specializing in motorcycle parts and mechanical equipment were the first to be hit before the flames rapidly spread to neighboring businesses.
Firefighters were deployed to contain the flames and prevent them from reaching nearby businesses.
Local authorities and police also set up a security perimeter around the market to help emergency crews work safely and keep traffic moving in the area.
The fire was brought under control after several hours. Emergency crews faced difficulties because of the market’s dense layout and the large amount of flammable materials inside many of the shops.
No injuries or deaths were reported. However, the fire destroyed or severely damaged several businesses. In a statement, Mohamed Gliouine, President of the Al Fida District Council, confirmed that the final toll stood at 15 destroyed stores.
Gliouine also said the relevant authorities, with the support of local associations, will consider compensation for the affected merchants.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Authorities have opened an investigation to establish how it erupted and to assess the full extent of the damage suffered by the traders.
