Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil announced on Monday that Moroccan ports have received some 538,000 passengers by July 15 as part of the “Marhaba 2024” operation, a 4% increase compared to the same period last year.
Abdeljalil, who gave a presentation on the “Marhaba 2024 provisional figures” at the House of Councillors, stressed that the Ministry, through all its components, will continue the general mobilization to ensure that the arrival of members of the Moroccan community and their passage through transit points take place in an optimal way, by reinforcing coordination, exchange of information and anticipating the challenges of managing periods of high influx through involving all the concerned stakeholders.
As in previous years, Morocco is set to see a large influx of members of the Moroccan diaspora coming to visit their homeland this year, said the Minister, adding that the Ministry and the institutions under its supervision have redoubled their efforts to ensure an adequate supply to meet demand in terms of international sea, air and road transport lines, in addition to supporting the transport companies involved in the Marhaba operation, by granting them the necessary licenses.
Addressing the maritime transport offer, Abdeljalil stated that the Ministry has mobilized a total of 29 ships, providing 535 weekly trips on all the maritime lines linking Moroccan and Spanish, French and Italian ports, with a total weekly capacity estimated at 487,000 passengers and 130,000 cars.
As for air transport, 52 airlines have been authorized to organize an average of 2,060 scheduled flights per week linking Morocco to 135 international airports in 52 countries, an increase of 15% compared with the 2023 summer period, explained the Minister.
With regard to international road passenger transport by bus, Abdeljalil said that a sufficient supply of transport services has been put in place, comprising 75 international transport companies, including 35 Moroccan companies operating 69 international passenger transport lines, linking France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands to Morocco and providing around 288 weekly trips, with a capacity of 14,400 seats.
The Minister pointed out that the Railways National Office (ONCF) has stepped up services, scheduling 48 trains a day to link Tangier with the Kingdom’s various cities, as well as 38 trains to link the Mohammed V Airport, with a frequency of one train an hour throughout the day.
