The Moroccan prison authority has decided to allow inmates to receive food baskets on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr, an exception to the usual ban.
In an official statement, the General Delegation for Prison Administration said that families can bring their relatives in prison food baskets starting from the second day of Eid. This will be permitted once for one week, following a schedule set by prison authorities.
The delegation said that the decision aims to support the mental well-being of prisoners and strengthen their bonds with their families during this religious holiday.
The exception also applies to foreign prisoners, who will be allowed to receive food baskets through diplomatic and consular representatives.
Prisons will provide all necessary facilities for inmates to contact their families and inform them about the conditions for bringing food baskets.
The prison administration called on families to cooperate responsibly and ensure the success of this initiative. It also warned against any attempts to use this opportunity to smuggle illegal items into prisons, saying this could threaten security and safety.
Morocco is set to celebrate Eid Al Fitr on Monday, according to astronomical calculations. But the official announcement will be made after the moon sighting committee observes the Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, crescent moon.
The moon sighting is taking place on Sunday evening in Morocco. If the crescent moon is observed that night, Eid will take place the following day, Monday. If not, the religious holiday will be celebrated on Tuesday.
