The 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held from April 15 to 19 in Istanbul, highlighted the efforts of the Moroccan Parliament to combat protectionism and tax evasion and to reduce customs barriers.

During the proceedings of the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Hassan Chamis said that the Moroccan Parliament, in close coordination with the government, has adopted a series of important measures related to the reduction of customs barriers on certain basic goods, citing the provisions of the 2025 Finance Law in this regard.

He noted that the Moroccan Parliament has also strengthened mechanisms to prevent corporate tax evasion, adding that recent finance laws have focused on reinforcing anti-evasion measures and integrating the informal economy, notably through digitalization, improved traceability, reform of income tax and value-added tax, and the increase of tax exemption thresholds to enhance the purchasing power of the middle class.

The Moroccan Parliament has also approved several bilateral agreements on the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of tax evasion, including recent agreements concluded with Chad, Burundi, Ghana, and Benin, he said, noting that these agreements fall within Morocco’s commitment to implementing the provisions of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

In addition, as part of promoting fair trade and combating protectionism, the Moroccan Parliament has consistently expressed concern over the rise in protectionist measures worldwide and their repercussions on national economies, including their impact on widening trade deficits, Chamis underlined.

Morocco is taking part in the 152nd IPU Assembly with a parliamentary delegation led by the Speaker of the House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid.
