Justice Minister Holds Talks with Belgian Peer

The Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, held talks on Thursday in Rabat with his Belgian peer, Annelies Verlinden, who is on a working visit to Morocco.

The talks between the two ministers focused on ways to strengthen legal and judicial cooperation between Morocco and Belgium, as well as prospects for developing a bilateral partnership in areas of common interest.

These include the modernization of judicial administration, the digitalization of judicial services, the exchange of experience in training and qualification, and the strengthening of coordination and cooperation in the face of new legal and judicial challenges of international dimension.

This meeting was also an opportunity to stress the importance of establishing sustainable institutional cooperation based on the exchange of expertise and know-how, as well as the development of joint working mechanisms capable of contributing to improving the functioning of judicial systems in both countries and strengthening mutual trust between judicial and legal institutions.

Ouahbi and Verlinden highlighted, in this regard, the crucial role of international judicial cooperation in supporting the rule of law, protecting rights and freedoms, and consolidating legal and judicial security.

The two ministers also reaffirmed their common commitment to further developing bilateral relations in the service of the interests of both countries, in order to strengthen the historical and human ties that unite the Moroccan and Belgian peoples, and to open up new prospects for cooperation in the judicial field. The objective is also to keep pace with current developments and contribute to building a more efficient, open, and high-performing judicial system.

Speaking to the press, Ouahbi highlighted the continuous development of Moroccan-Belgian relations, noting that his discussions with Ms. Verlinden covered a number of common issues that will be the subject of future meetings within the framework of the competent commissions.

For her part, the Belgian Minister of Justice stated that her visit to the Kingdom testifies to the excellence of relations and the solid cooperation existing between the judicial authorities and the public prosecution services of Morocco and Belgium, stressing that the two countries share the same ambition in terms of fighting organized crime and strengthening cooperation in this field.

According to a Ministry of Justice press release issued on Thursday, the Belgian minister’s visit to Morocco is part of strengthening and consolidating cooperation and strategic partnership relations between the two countries in various fields, notably legal and judicial.

This visit, the same source added, is of particular importance in view of the rapid transformations taking place in judicial systems worldwide, which require the development of international cooperation mechanisms and the exchange of expertise and best practices to meet common challenges and improve the efficiency of judicial institutions and their ability to respond to the needs of citizens and litigants, in accordance with the highest standards of quality and effectiveness.

Verlinden’s visit also bears witness to the status enjoyed by the Kingdom of Morocco as a reliable and active partner in its regional and international environment, and the notable progress it has made in reforming and modernizing the judicial system, thanks to the implementation of major projects related to digital transformation, simplification of procedures, strengthening of judicial governance, and the development of services for users.
