Morocco’s head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, emphasized that the Netherlands showed considerable respect for his team by starting the match with five defenders in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash.

The Atlas Lions reached the quarterfinals after beating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw that was equalized by Issa Diop in the 90’+1 minute. Morocco will face Canada next in the round of 16.

Speaking after the match, Ouahbi admitted he was surprised by the Dutch lineup.

“We were surprised to see the Netherlands play with so many defenders,” he said. “We expected them to sit deep, so we had to adapt. At first, we did not know how they would play when they had the ball. After the first half, thanks to my coaching staff’s analysis, we found the right solution. I want to thank my staff.”

Ouahbi commended his players for their performance and said every member of the squad played an important role.

“We played well, and I trusted my players,” he maintained. “When I make substitutions, it is to make the team stronger. I have confidence in everyone.”

Morocco’s coach also hailed the young players who came off the bench.

“I am happy with the players’ effort and commitment,” he said. “The young players deserve their chance. Players born in 2005, like Gessime, Mourabit, and Talbi, made a big difference.”

Ouahbi believes Morocco has earned the respect of top teams through years of development and hard work.

“Everyone respects Morocco now,” he said. “This did not happen because of words. It happened because of the work we have done over many years, starting with the youth teams. Seeing the Netherlands defend deep against us is a sign of respect.”
