Morocco has become a key player in regional economic transformation, industrial development, and modernization over the past 25 years, according to an analysis by the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI).

Since HM King Mohammed VI ascended to the throne, Morocco has made substantial investments in infrastructure, the automobile sector, and energy transition, bolstering its global appeal, the think tank says in its latest report.

ISPI highlights that infrastructure development has been pivotal in Morocco’s industrial boom, positioning the Kingdom as a major player in global trade and integrating it into international value chains.

The country’s strategic geographical location, with proximity to Europe and an Atlantic coastline, has helped Morocco solidify its role as a commercial hub and gateway to West Africa and the broader continent. This is further enhanced by free trade agreements with the European Union, the United States, and strong ties with China and sub-Saharan Africa.

The report also emphasizes Morocco’s robust port expansion, including the soon-to-be operational Nador West Med port in the north, which will host the nation’s first regasification terminal. In the south, the Dakhla Atlantique project is underway, alongside Tangier Med, the largest port in the Mediterranean by container capacity.

Beyond maritime infrastructure, Morocco has invested heavily in railway and highway networks, along with significant strides in water resource management, including interconnections between dams and reservoirs, ISPI notes.

The think tank also highlights Morocco’s automotive industry, noting that the country has become Africa’s leading car producer and exporter, surpassing South Africa. Morocco is now positioning itself to play a significant role in the electric vehicle market, with national initiatives to produce domestically-made electric cars, including the Neo brand, and investments in key components like batteries and chips.

Regarding energy, ISPI underscores Morocco’s emergence as a regional leader in the energy transition, particularly within the MENA region. Morocco aims to leverage the green transition to enhance its energy security and become a key exporter of renewable energy.
