The time has come to move beyond incremental changes and develop a new vision for safer mobility, Nawal El Moutawakel said before the United Nations General Assembly, speaking in her capacity as a high-level advocate for road safety.
Addressing the closing session of the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Road Safety on Tuesday, El Moutawakel stressed that road safety should never be regarded as an “afterthought,” but “must be embedded in the way we design our cities and our infrastructure.”
Road safety, she said, is everyone’s responsibility. Success in this field “requires the collective engagement of the transport, health, education, urban planning, finance, and technology sectors, together with civil society, academia, and the private sector.”
El Moutawakel also called for a redefinition of mobility, noting that the objective is no longer simply to move more vehicles, “but to move people safely, to move people equitably and sustainably.”
As societies evolve, so do the challenges, she pointed out, citing rapid urbanization, digital transformation, new forms of mobility and changing work patterns, which “require us to remain agile, innovative and forward-looking.”
Initiated by the President of the United Nations General Assembly and the World Health Organization (WHO), the High-Level Meeting was held under the theme: “Scaling up and accelerating implementation of commitments to halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030.”
