Minister of Energy Leila Benali has commended Morocco’s efficiency approach, which will allow for energy savings of 20% by 2030.

On Wednesday, the minister said that the approach takes into account several objectives outlined in the country’s sustainable development strategy as well as the recommendations by the new development model.

The approach focuses on ensuring that “new investment projects adhere to the principles of energy efficiency,” Benali said, adding that it incorporates these measures “into public spending and programs benefiting from state support.” She added that this makes “energy efficiency a central concern for professionals and citizens.”

The minister described energy efficiency as a “second pillar” of Morocco’s national energy strategy, presenting a promising area for job creation in the energy field.

An estimated 100,000 job opportunities are also expected by 2030, the minister said, noting that energy savings of 6.58% were recorded in 2020.

The Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency is now working on updating the indicator, the minister announced, adding that the implementation of energy efficiency measures in the public lighting sector will reduce energy consumption by 40%.

The government has launched a pioneering initiative that rewards citizens and stakeholders who achieve energy savings in their electricity consumption, which resulted in a 3% reduction in energy consumption.

Morocco has been pledging further efforts to boost its renewable energy assets as part of the country’s sustainable development strategy.

The North African country’s focus is to position itself as a regional leader in Africa in terms of green energy transition, with a primary goal is to produce 52% of its energy through clean renewable sources by 2030.

The objective is achievable as the country is home to large-scale renewable energy projects, including the Noor Ouarzazate Complex. Producing around 580 MW, this complex stands as one of the world’s largest concentrated solar power plants.

On Monday, Benali said that over 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects have been approved during the current government’s term. These projects represent an investment of more than MAD 19 billion ($1.8 billion) and have already created over 300 direct jobs and thousands of indirect ones.
