The Moroccan delegation reiterated on Wednesday, before the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, the Royal vision according to which the Kingdom seeks to empower Africa with leadership.
Speaking at this meeting, ahead of the elections for the new AU leadership, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, emphasized this Royal vision, noting that Morocco does not seek to acquire leadership in Africa, but rather aims to empower Africa with leadership.
In this regard, the minister cited the Royal Speech delivered at the 28th African Union Summit in 2017, in which the Sovereign declared “Some say that, through this commitment, Morocco is seeking to gain leadership in Africa. I tell them that it is to Africa that the Kingdom is seeking to give the leadership.”
Bourita also highlighted that Morocco has made the responsible choice to participate in the elections in order to provide the organization with the most qualified profiles to contribute to its influence and development.
“The participation in this commendable competition does not stem from a hegemonic ambition, as some might suggest. Rather, it reflects a deep-rooted commitment to Pan-Africanism and the noble causes of the continent and its citizens,” he said.
It is also a faithful reflection of the guiding principles set by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in His speech of January 31, 2017, the minister added.
“We need, now more than ever, leaders capable of alleviating the burden of bureaucracy that weighs on our Organization, making its management more transparent, more connected to African realities, and its actions on the ground more effective, while also breaking down the barriers that hinder proper coordination among its various bodies”, he stressed.
Without strong and determined leadership at the helm of the Pan-African Organization, the expected objectives risk remaining mere aspirations, he underlined.
