A delegation from the France-Morocco friendship group in the French Senate, led by its president Christian Cambon, held a meeting on Thursday in Rabat with members of the Morocco-France parliamentary friendship group, chaired by parliamentary advisor Mohamed Zidouh, as part of the remarkable momentum characterizing the relations between the House of Councillors and the French Senate.

This meeting, held at the headquarters of the House, was an opportunity to praise the dynamic and distinguished level of relations between the two friendship and cooperation groups within the two parliamentary institutions, according to a press release issued Friday by the House of Councillors.

This momentum is reflected in the numerous joint activities scheduled in the work program developed by both parties, which demonstrates the commitment of the presidencies of the two legislative institutions to support the role of friendship groups in strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in their parliamentary dimension, the same source notes.

The two parties emphasized the particularly important role of friendship groups in creating a space for continuous dialogue and coordination. In this context, they recalled the visit made by the President of the French Senate to Morocco last February, at the invitation of the President of the House of Councillors, which marked a key milestone in enhancing bilateral parliamentary relations.

On this occasion, “both parties welcomed France’s consistent stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue, as expressed by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, in his message to His Majesty King Mohammed VI on July 30, 2024, and reaffirmed during Macron’s state visit to Morocco at the end of last year,” the same source added, noting that the same position was reiterated by the President of the French Senate from the city of Laayoune.

The two parties also praised “Cambon’s positions supporting the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and his commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Morocco and France, as well as his unwavering support for initiatives aimed at consolidating bilateral relations.”

Furthermore, the meeting provided an opportunity to review the achievements made in the cooperation process between the two friendship groups and to underscore the importance of organizing the fifth edition of the Morocco-France Parliamentary Forum, “as a major institutional step to discuss issues of common interest and reinforce parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.”

Regarding cooperation in key sectors, both parties called for strengthening cultural and economic partnerships while highlighting the importance of strategic projects currently underway in Morocco.

They also expressed their appreciation for Morocco’s role, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in supporting the stability of the Sahara and Sahel region, affirming that the Kingdom remains a strategic partner for France in its outreach toward Africa.

In this regard, both parties recalled royal initiatives aimed at enhancing South-South cooperation, notably the Royal Initiative to facilitate access of Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
