Police officers and Customs services at the Tanger Med port foiled, in the early hours of Sunday, a trafficking attempt of 4.374 metric tons of cannabis resin (chira) concealed aboard an international freight truck.

The joint control operations carried out by the police and Customs services led to the seizure of the sizeable drug shipment, which had been carefully concealed within a load of fruit transported by a trailer hauled by a Morocco-registered truck bound for a European port, according to a security source.

The 51-year-old Moroccan truck driver was placed under judicial investigation, as ordered by the competent public prosecutor, to determine the circumstances of the case and uncover potential links to national and international drug trafficking networks, the same source said.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts by security services at border crossings to combat international drug and psychotropic substance trafficking networks, the source added.
