The head coach of Morocco’s U20 national football team, Mohamed Ouahbi, stated on Saturday that Mexico deserved their 1-0 win over Morocco on Matchday 3 (Group C) of the 2025 U20 World Cup in Chile, emphasizing that the most important thing now is to prepare properly for the Round of 16.

“Mexico deserved the win. What we aim for is to represent Morocco in the best possible way, whether in high-pressure matches or in games with no stakes where we are already qualified,” he told the press after this match, which held no consequence for the Atlas Cubs, who had already secured a place in the Round of 16.

“We tried (…), but we didn’t succeed. We need to keep improving until the Round of 16,” he added.

“It’s not because we played new players that we didn’t want to win this match. The Mexicans were better than us. We didn’t create many chances. The match came down to small details, second balls and duels, which they won more than we did,” he explained.

Commenting on the officiating, the national coach felt that Mexican players should have received two yellow cards in the first half.

“I was upset about the yellow card given to Ali Maamar, and especially the fact that only five minutes of stoppage time were added, but that’s not the reason we lost,” he said.

“This defeat brought us back down to earth. It will help us going forward,” he underlined.

Despite the loss, Morocco tops the group with 6 points, following earlier victories over Spain (2-0) and Brazil (2-1), followed by Mexico (5 points),Spain (4 points) and Brazil (1 point).

In the other match of the group, Spain defeated Brazil 1-0.
