Morocco and Sweden signed on Tuesday a declaration of intent to deepen bilateral cooperation in the judicial and legal fields.

Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi signed the agreement with his Swedish counterpart Gunnar Strommer, who is on a high-level visit in Morocco.

“Morocco is committed to building a transparent, modern judicial system open to international cooperation,” Ouhabi said.

Strommer echoed the same sentiment, describing judicial cooperation between the two countries as “fruitful.”

“Through this declaration of intent, we are deepening this collaboration further. On the Swedish side, we look forward to continued exchanges and strengthened collaboration between the authorities of our two countries,” Strommer said.

Under the declaration, the two countries seek to establish a framework for future cooperation, with a focus on strengthening the rule of law, protecting human rights, and upholding fundamental freedoms.

The declaration also seeks to expand cooperation in criminal, civil, and commercial law as well as promote alternative dispute resolution mechanisms like mediation, conciliation, and arbitration.

The two countries also aim to exchange expertise and experiences in judicial digitalization, good governance, and improving the quality of judicial services, as well as supporting efforts to modernize judicial administration.

According to a joint statement on the signing, Morocco and Sweden emphasized their commitment to broadening their cooperation within the framework of international conventions, binding the two countries, including the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, and the Convention against Corruption.

The Moroccan Justice Minister held bilateral talks at the end of the ceremony, focusing on developing institutional partnership through working meetings, exchange workshops, and mutual visits.

This partnership with Sweden “reflects our shared values of the rule of law, human rights, and institutional innovation,” he said.
